Create a Facebook account

Create a Facebook Account

In this exercise, you will create a Facebook account, add some friends, and add some applications to your profile.

Instructions:

  1. Go to www.facebook.com.
  2. Enter your name, e-mail address, password, gender and birthdate. Click the "Sign Up" button.
  3. Enter the letters you see in the CAPTCHA image. Click the "Sign Up" button.
  4. You must check your e-mail to complete your registration.
  5. After clicking the link to complete your registration, Facebook will give you the option of finding friends by using your e-mail address book. You can try finding friends this way or you can click "Skip this step" to proceed.
  6. The next screen will ask you for basic profile information. Fill out this information and click Save.
  7. Facebook will then ask if you want to join a network where you can connect with other people living in the same geographical area. You can join a network or you can click "Skip this step".
  8. The registration process is now complete. You can now click "View and edit your profile" to provide more detailed information in your profile and add a photo. Once you have finished your profile, you need to do the following things to complete the assignment:
    • Become a fan of the SEMLS Learning 2.0 Page on Facebook. In the upper right corner, you will see a search box. Type "semls" in the box and then click the magnifying glass. SEMLS Learning 2.0 page will appear in your search results. Click SEMLS Learning 2.0 to view the page. You can then click "Become a Fan" in the right sidebar. This is where our class discussions will take place this week.
    • Add Friends - You can start with me and your other classmates. If you are already on the SEMLS Learning 2.0 page, I will be listed as one of the fans, along with members of our last Learning 2.0 class and other librarians who have found the page. Click on my photo or name to get to my listing. You can click on "Add to Friends" from this listing (I will need to approve this before you are able to see my full profile.) If there are other SEMLS Learning 2.0 participants listed as Fans, try adding them as friends as well.

You can also search for friends by typing their name or e-mail address in the same search box that we used to find the SEMLS Learning 2.0 page.

    • Add at least five applications to Facebook - For me, applications are the fun part of using Facebook. Applications give you an opportunity to share certain information about yourself with your friends and can also give you some fun games and quizzes to play while you are in your Facebook account. There are a couple of ways to find applications:
      • Look at the profile of one of your Facebook friends. The applications are typically listed in the left column of their main page or on their "Boxes" tab. If you see an application you want to incorporate in your own profile, look for a link that will allow you to add it to your own profile.
      • If you know the name of an application you want to add, you can search it by clicking on the "Applications" button in the lower left corner and then selecting "Find More."
      • Some recommended library-related applications:
        • Worldcat - Search for an item in a library near you.
        • LibGuides - A way to create subject guides for users to access through their Facebook accounts.
      • Some recommended Web 2.0 applications
        • Simplaris Blogcast - Display the most recent posts from your blog on your Facebook profile.
        • Delicious - There are several applications to display your del.icio.us bookmarks on your profile.
        • My Flickr - Display recent photos from your Flickr photo stream.
      • Some recommended fun applications
        • WordScraper, WordTwist, Scramble - I love word games, and I know there are other librarians who love them as well. WordScraper is like Scrabble with a twist. Scramble is like Boggle.
        • Cities I've Visited - Show friends where you have traveled by identifying all of the cities you've visited on a map of the world.
        • Superpoke - Give high-fives or hugs to your friends on Facebook.
        • Book-related apps.
    • Don't forget to update your status - This is not required for the assignment, but, if you look to the right of your profile picture, there is a text box where you can update your status. This is a place where you can quickly let people what you are doing for the day or the hour.
