Images & Recommending a Good Book
This week, we will look at two sites that incorporate the tagging we learned about last week with some social networking features that we will learn about later in the course. Flickr is a site where people can upload and share photos, organize them with tags, and easily access the photos of their friends and family. LibraryThing is a site where people can catalog their personal libraries, organize them with tags, and share their titles with friends and family.
Schedule for Week 3
OVERVIEW By Tuesday: Learn about Flickr and LibraryThing
EXERCISE By Tuesday: Explore the photo sharing site Flickr.
By the end of this exercise, you will have seen how libraries are using
Flickr and have added a photo to your blog using Flickr's blogging tool.
EXERCISE By Wednesday: Create an account on LibraryThing or GoodReads. Add at least three books to your account.
DISCUSSION By Wednesday: Post a comment to this page reflecting on the exercises you did this week. While posting, consider the following questions:
- Of the four sites you have visited that incorporate tagging (Delicious, Technorati, Flickr, LibraryThing), which do you personally like the best? Which do you think would be the most useful in your library?
- What are some ways you could use Flickr and LibraryThing in your libraries?
- How does a LibraryThing record compare to the MARC record in your library's catalog? Is there information in the LibraryThing record that make it a more valuable source of information than a standard MARC record?
DISCUSSION by Friday - Respond to at least one of the comments made on this page.
